                  Pot Luck

The still life owes its existence to the grace of objects, in the broadest possible sense. The objects are subservient in that they catch the light and cast shadows, filling space and highlighting the essence of emptiness. Confusing as their beauty may be, it's perfectly alright for their shape to charm the audience if only so as to put paid to unsightliness … provided they aren't allowed to take over.

Funnily enough many of Bernard Verkaaik's pots do not fit the above profile: how on earth could such a round, solid and overwhelming shape fall in with a composition? Like a planet with plums as satellites, with the light not only darting around but finding the pockmarked skin itself as well. One step further and you'd be convinced that you'd be able to spot life provided you managed to get close enough, just as the earth looks somewhat rusty and mouldy when observed from outer space.

It's true that the pots have a secret of their own, but all the same Verkaaik manages to twist them around his little finger, both literally and figuratively.
