Theo Voorzaat
Voorzaat...
Oh testators of our civilisation
Oh moral crusaders among today's visionaries
Oh indifferent ones, consuming ones, slavish followers
Oh pipe dreamers, educators, inspirers
Oh doom mongers, fatalists and so on
Oh nostalgia, dream of the past, yearning for the familiar
Oh misconception, misrepresentation and deception
Oh foolhardiness, apathy and incredulity
All this baggage is reflected
In Theo Voorzaat's paintings
Is this meaningful, you ask?
You bet it is.
As long as people can still think this up
All hope is not lost
There is beauty in everything that is ugly
Last but not least, in the light
That Voorzaat has radiating into the dark
Light from every angle
Taunting the laws of the mind
Yet shining direct on the senses
Sense of hopefulness and survival,
Of remaining in control,
Of applying double standards
For one-sidedness
Pushes everything that went before over the edge
But this too is already weighing us down
Where it should in fact offer us relativity.
So, how to place Voorzaat in the light of history.
The difference with his predecessors?
They date back to a time when the view still stretched just beyond the horizon
Where mankind now measures its fate in terms of global dimensions
Knows more than ever before, yet is not capable of achieving as much
Voorzaat's strength is that he takes hold of the world in a wrench
Yet lets go before the message has weighed down the brush.
If this is what mankind has chosen,
Then so be it,
With thanks for the lovely painting.
