Paintings by Voorzaat, Snijders and Sirag perished in fireworks catastophe |
Several works by our artists perished in the fireworks explosion which tore through the town of Enschede last month: six paintings by Theo Voorzaat and one by Ben Snijders, and one miniature by Karel Sirag. The ruinous theme of Voorzaat’s work makes it painfully appropriate in this context that it should be one of his paintings that was lost never in a month of Sundays could the artist have imagined that part of his oeuvre would come to form part of such a scene of devastation, not even when he was working on the painting below, which currently remains on show at the gallery. |
Theo Voorzaat, "Een Duivelse Motorrijder" (Demonic Motorcyclist) 1999, olieverf/masoniet, 75 x 54,5 cm |
Ben Snijders had just started preparations for his retrospective to be held at “Slot Zeist” Castle from 25 November 2001 to 6 January 2002. The painting that was lost in the explosion formed part of a diptych featuring small Japanese dolls. The destroyed painting will in any event be included in the book scheduled for publication in conjunction with the retrospective. |
Ben Snijders, "Diptych with Geisha Doll", oil on wood, 30 x 17,5 cm (2 x).
The right-hand panel of the diptych was lost in the fireworks catastrophe in Enschedé. |
