I almost did it again, although the circumstances were very different. It was hot and I was in the process of knocking up a stir-fry when I felt a large daddy longlegs aimlessly brush against my hairy legs. Perhaps it panicked or perhaps something else set it off, it doesn't really matter. Anyhow, all of a sudden it was hovering over my wok, only to be swept away, I was convinced, by a tossed-up spoonful of the tasty meal I was preparing. Of course this instantly filled me with hesitation: should I discard all that delicious food for no other reason than that a sizeable long-legged insect had got itself trapped in it?

It was only much later that I considered the wealth of lecithin contained in its legs - had it actually been a daddy, I found myself wondering - and the wholesome proteins in the rest of its body. At the time I felt I should get over it and put the thought of that poor stir-fried insect out of my mind. I did, however, turn up the heat - what conclusive proof was there, after all, of insects being impervious to foot and mouth disease, it being an established fact that the majority of tiny creatures had it in for mankind.

All the same I was quite relieved when a little later I saw the daddy longlegs hover by in its tirelessly aimless manner, as far as I could tell.
